Biography
Portuguese politician, elected President on 22 January 2006. Prior to that he served for ten years as Prime Minister, from 6 November 1985 to 28 October 1995, the longest of any democratically elected Prime Minister in Portuguese history. During those ten years, he set another record when he won an absolute parliamentary majority and then repeated that feat.
With a doctorate from the University of York, he began his career as a college professor of economics. In 1980 he entered politics when he was appointed Minister of Finance by then-Prime Minister Francisco Sá Carneiro.
