Biography
German Communist politician. In the late 1920s he became a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League in Germany. After Hitler took power in 1933, he went into hiding. In 1934 he was arrested and sentenced to three years in prison for "conspiracy to commit high treason." After serving this sentence he was put into a concentration camp until the war ended in 1945. After the war, Schirdewan rose through the ranks of the communist party. He reached his career peak in the 1950s, when he was considered the second most powerful communist after Walter Ulbricht. He died on July 14, 1998 in Potsdam.
