Biography
Brazilian chess player, awarded the title of International Grandmaster in 2012 by FIDE (The Fédération Internationale des Échecs or World Chess Federation).
The son of a journalist father and aromatherapist mother, Yago Santiago was taught the basics of how to play chess by his father at the age of eight and his first participation in competition chess occurred when he was ten years old, with his parents' support. A fast learner known for making variant calculations quickly, he today stands out with his aggressive style of play. In his official matches, Santiago has a special predilection for the Sicilian Defence.
In 2009 he became absolute champion of the Northeast of Brazil and, in the same year, he achieved the FIDE Masters title. On 22 June 2012 he became the first player from Pernambuco to win the title of International Grandmaster and the first Northeastern chess player to perform such a feat representing a federation of Northeast Brazil.
