Roman Pucinski

Biography

American Democratic politician from Chicago, Illinois, who was a U.S. Representative from 1959 to 1973 and alderman from the 41st Ward of Chicago from 1973 to 1991. He was considered a longtime leader of Chicago Polonia (Americans of Polish heritage living in Chicago) and was seen to represent its interests in Washington along with Congressman Dan Rostenkowski.

During World War II, he served in the Air Force. Pucinski later worked in journalism for many years, notably at the Chicago Sun-Times.

His daughter Aurelia followed him into law and politics. Pucinski died in Chicago on 25 September 2002 at age 83, and his son Christopher died in 2006.

Sy Scholfield quotes him in Chicago Tribune, Friday 13 May 1977, page 20: "Ald. Roman Pucinski ... turns 58 years old this Friday 13th. 'Not only was I born on the 13th, but I was born at 1 o'clock in the afternoon which is 1300 hours in European time, and there are 13 letters in my name'".
