Biography

British comedian of over 40 years with partner Ernie Wise until his death on 28 May 1984. A book was published in 1998 about the great comic partnership of Morecambe and Wise. They first met when they attended the same audition in the spring of 1939 and first played on the same show in 1940 in Youth Takes a Bow. Their TV debut was not that successful, The Morecambe & Wise Show on BBC1 on 21 April 1954; however, by their Christmas show on 25 December 1977, they had almost 29 million viewers.

Ernie Wise travelled to the USA for critical heart surgery and was very ill in early 1999. Wise died on 21 March 1999 in a hospital in Wexham, England.

Eric Morecambe married Joan Bartlett in Thanet, Kent on 11 December 1952. They had three children: Gail (born 14 September 1953); Gary (born 21 April 1956) and Steven (who was born in 1970, but whom they adopted in 1974).

He had his first heart attack in 1968 at age 42, a second in 1979 and died from his third shortly before 3 AM at Cheltenham General Hospital on 28 May 1984 at age 58.
