Biography

French resistance fighter known as the subject of the 2020 film Colette which won the Oscar for best documentary short at the 93rd Academy Awards on 25 April 2021, her 92nd birthday.

She joined the Resistance in the summer of 1944 where she was a reconnaissance agent and then a nurse after the Normandy landings. Her brother, Jean-Pierre Catherine, also a resistant, was arrested in 1943 and died in the Dora concentration camp in 1945.

After the war, she became a seamstress, a manager of hotels, and pursued memorial work. Since the 2010s, Colette Marin-Catherine regularly gave lectures at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, Louisiana in the United States, or in Caen, France at the Memorial and Café Mancel, and she received Americans on each anniversary of disembarkation.

Colette Marin-Catherine took care of her mother until her death. She was by then 40 years old and never married again.

The film Colette follows 90-year-old Marin-Catherine as she travels to Germany for the first time in 74 years to visit the concentration camp where her brother Jean-Pierre died. It was produced by French Alice Doyard and directed by American Anthony Giacchino in 2020.

Source Notes

From her in an interview, "RENCONTRE.

Abridged translation: "I was born on 25 April 1929 in Bretteville-l'Orgueilleuse (Calvados). The year I was born became famous thanks to the global financial crash."
