Karl Lepsius

Biography

German Egyptologist and a founder of modern, scientific archaeology who did much to catalog Egyptian archaeological remains and to establish a chronology for Egyptian history.

For three years (1842-1845) Lepsius and his party explored the whole of the region in which monuments of ancient Egyptian and Ethiopian occupation are found, from the Sudan above Khartoum to the Syrian coast.

Lepsius published widely in the field of Egyptology, and is considered the father of the modern scientific discipline of Egyptology

Under Lepsius’s direction, the Egyptian collection of the Berlin Museum became one of the world’s finest.

He died 10 July 1884, Berlin.
