Biography
Belgian businessman, the brother of Auguste, Célina, Édouard, Jules JJ, Léopold and Louis J. Delhaize. He was the first of the family to open a store of colonial foodstuffs, wines and spirits in Châtelet in 1866. After working with his brothers Jules JJ and Édouard and his brother-in-law Jules Vieujant in the company Delhaize Frères et Cie (1871-1874), he created with his in-laws his own company Adolphe Delhaize et Cie. It was a rapid success and had nearly half a thousand branches at the turn of the century. He had three boys and three daughters, one of whom, Juliette, married Alberic De Pauw, who took over the management of the company at his death, assuming this responsibility for nearly 40 years. In 1950, most of the shares of what had become an S.A. on 10 November 1939 were bought by Delhaize LeLion, which thus brought about the merger between the two firms. Since 1980, the acronym AD has stood for both Adolphe Delhaize and Affiliés Delhaize, the chain created in 1981 which brings together medium-sized grocery stores.
On 28 November 1866 he married Adolphine Delhaize-Stainier. He died on 9 October 1899 in Bousval at age 59.
