Biography

Belgian entrepreneur, who founded the Colruyt discount supermarket retail store chain in 1928. Headquartered in the city of Halle, south of Brussels, the company today has operations in Belgium, France and Luxembourg, and more than 30,000 employees.

In his youth Franz Colruyt took over his father's bakery and annexed a grocery store. In the 1920s, he launched into the wholesale trade in colonial foodstuffs. On 9 March 1950, he created the S.A. Les Établissements Franz Colruyt, which traded in food products and household and maintenance items. When he died, the company was delivering food products to more than 800 merchants.

In 1927, he married Adeline Colruyt-Moens. He died on 4 November 1958 in Halle at age 56.
