Biography
German jazz musician (trumpet, violin, piano) and composer; in 1960 he was described as "the top German trumpeter from 1930 to today".
He started out by founding his own "Berry-Band" with Hans Rettig, then he had numerous engagements, including from 1929 to 1931 with "Fabian's Jazz Syncopators", and briefly with the famous "Weintraubs Syncopators". Then Hans Berry played with Billy Bartholomew and Kurt Widmann.
On 19 August 1935 the Nazis banned him from employment, however he worked in Switzerland, and later also in the Netherlands and Belgium. He played with Coleman Hawkins, Teddy Stauffer, the Lanigiros, Carlo Minari, Willie Lewis, Benny Carter, Bill Coleman, Ray Ventura, Gus Clark, Davie Bee, Fud Candrix, Jean Omer, Rex Stewart and in the Belgian Quintette du Hot Club.
Hans Berry died in Berlin on 7 October 1984 at age 78.
