Biography

British journalist author of science fiction novels and short stories. His first work "The Rod of Light" was published in 1958. His work is not to every science-fiction fan's taste as it is been described as"absurist space opera," in which he incorporated metaphysical themes. He made his living as a journalist and columnist and as a coalminer. In 1997 he won the British Science Fiction Association's best short fiction award for "A Crab Must Die."

He was married in 1969; he and his wife had two children. He died in Shrewsbury, England on October 14, 2008 (one unconfirmed source gave the cause as "complications from bowel cancer" and obituaries in two newspapers give his date of death as October 13, 2008).
