Biography
American attorney and lobbyist, accused and convicted of misuse of funds to unduly influence members of Congress. In 2006 he was convicted of tax evasion, fraud and conspiracy for his role in a casino deal. He bilked Native American tribes millions of dollars, assuring them that he would lobby on their behalf for rights to build and manage a casino. Ordered to pay $21 million in restitution, he also received a jail sentence of five years and 10 months. In 2008 he received an additonal sentence of four years in jail and was order to pay $23 million in restitution.
Born to Frank(lin) and Jane Abramoff, he is an Orthodox Jew and a political conservative. He became active in the Republican party's conservative wing while attending Brandeis University and proved to be a capable fundraiser. He is associated with Ralph Reed and Grover Norquist, right-wing strategists and fund-raisers and became well known on Capital Hill until his downfall in 2006.
